United States: five alleged Russian agents indicted for assassination and attack plans
The American Department of Justice announced on Tuesday, September 15, the indictment of five alleged agents of the Russian intelligence services, all on the run, accused of having conspired to sponsor assassinations and finance attacks in the United States and Europe.
The group, active for at least two years, notably attempted to assassinate “an important Russian dissident” in the United States this summer, the ministry said without naming the target in a press release on Tuesday.
Its members “allegedly acted within a global network of assassins that extended to the United States, attempting to recruit American citizens and foreign nationals to commit murder at the Kremlin’s request,” denounced John Eisenberg, deputy attorney general for national security.
The three main suspects are Yuri Khrameev, presented as a 61-year-old former colonel in the Russian intelligence services, his 27-year-old son Kirill, an FSB officer, and a 35-year-old Cuban, Oemis Romagoza Durruthy, “an influential member of the Cuban diaspora in Russia”.
Failed assassination attempts
The last two, another Cuban, also aged 35, Yaidel Delgado Suarez, and a 22-year-old Venezuelan, Angel Eduardo Castro, acted in particular as recruiting agents on American territory.
The assassination attempt on the Russian dissident is the latest by the group, according to American authorities.
The project failed after a man recruited by Yaidel Delgado Suarez to do scouting refused to commit the crime, for which he was offered $40,000.
In 2025, an assassination attempt by Yuri Khrameev in Lithuania against another opponent of Russia failed for similar reasons.
The indictment from the American justice system also mentions plans for attacks against infrastructure (warehouses, electrical substations) in Lithuania and the Czech Republic prepared by the group which targeted European countries supporting Ukraine.
