Emmanuel Macron warned this Tuesday at the UN platform against the “return of the law of the jungle” in the world and called for standing “straight alongside the United Nations” to preserve a “civilized international society”. “Everyone describes the return of imperialism, of arrogance, the return to force without rule or restraint, a world basically concentrated on power,” he pointed out during his last intervention at the United Nations General Assembly since he will leave the Élysée next May after ten years in power.
Targeting the United States, Russia and China, he denounced “those who think that we can undermine the international order to expand our borders”, “trample on the sovereignty of peoples to control it ourselves” and “decide on the future of the planet, whether it is the climate or artificial intelligence”. “The question posed to us in a very simple way is whether we want to live in this state of nature, with a form of return of the law of the jungle or in a civilized international society,” insisted Emmanuel Macron. “Our duty more than ever is to stand tall alongside the United Nations to decide precisely together on the common interest,” he added. “Where the law of the strongest tries to impose itself, we must defend justice and the common interest. »
Gaza: “a spectacle that shames us”
In the Ukrainian conflict, the French president called for a “double moratorium” on strikes against energy sites in Russia and Ukraine. He also called for “a moratorium on the Black Sea which will free up cereals and provide an answer to the question of food security which is so crucial for so many emerging and developing countries”.
The French president, who initiated a movement to recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in 2025, deplored a year later “a spectacle that shames us all” in Gaza. “What is our credibility if we continue to remain inactive against Gaza? “, he said, stressing that building a two-state solution was the condition for “the security of today and tomorrow for Israel and its people”.
Israel denounces the “grotesque absurdity” of Macron’s remarks
Israel reacted strongly to the comments of the French president, who criticized Israeli actions in the West Bank by affirming that Hamas was not active in this territory where the Palestinian Authority is based.
“The grotesque absurdity of Emmanuel Macron’s remarks is staggering,” declared the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is due to give a speech to the international body on Thursday.
An alternative AI?
On AI, he urged all states “attached to their independence” to develop alternative artificial intelligence (AI) in order to depend neither on the United States nor on China. “It is necessary that” this coalition of independents (…) who do not want to become vassals of one or the other of the two great world powers come together to develop a + open source + frontier model (advanced AI accessible to all) by pooling the computing capacities that are at their disposal, by pooling their investment capacities (to create an AI) that we would share,” he declared.
The French president ultimately called for “not to give in” to “the spirit of defeat” and “the abuse of power” and to restore the “vitality” of the United Nations to stop a “slow division of the world”.
