UNITED STATES. Washington, Copenhagen and Nuuk to sign Greenland agreement on Tuesday in New York

Greenland, Denmark and the United States will sign the agreement on this Arctic territory on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the office of the Danish Prime Minister announced this Monday evening. “The signing ceremony will take place in the United Nations building at 10:30 a.m. local time (4:30 p.m. Paris time)” and the agreement will be signed by Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and President of the United States Donald Trump, it is specified in a press release.

The latter had caused a major crisis with the Europeans by threatening to purely and simply attach the autonomous Danish territory to the United States with its strategic position and coveted resources. This agreement, announced Friday by Donald Trump, has not yet been published. But it “recognizes” the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination, the Danish Prime Minister reaffirmed Monday evening to Danish media.

It is “a good agreement from the Danish point of view,” she told DR radio from New York. “And when it is beneficial for the Nordic countries and for security in the Arctic region, it is also beneficial for NATO and for Europe.” According to Washington, the agreement guarantees that China and Russia will not be able to establish military bases in Greenland, nor make sensitive investments there without its agreement. It also opens the way to a strengthening of the American military presence.
