Emergency responders are investigating a reported explosion near a crossing camp near the 1500 block of Guintoli Road this morning.

Around 9:29 a.m., the first reports indicated a large explosion and the possibility of a death. Subsequent reports indicated that Arcata Police Department personnel were transporting an injured person by ATV to Eureka Ready Mix to meet the city ambulance.

Secondary reports from a witness at the scene indicated that there were “significant injuries from the explosion, but not much fire activity.”

The circumstances of the explosion, the extent of the injuries and the cause have not yet been confirmed.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Updated at 10:20 a.m.: According to scanner traffic, a male patient was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Injuries included the amputation of at least one hand, shrapnel in the abdomen, and burns to the body and face caused by a bottle rocket explosion.
