The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for six people aboard a medical transport plane that crashed while flying between Bermuda and Boston.

“Suspending the search is not an easy decision,” Rear Adm. Matthew Lake, commander of the Coast Guard’s Northeast District, said Sunday.

The search was called off after teams spent about 66 hours traveling 4,500 miles (7,150 km) by air and sea and confirmed that debris found off the coast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, came from the plane.

The Gulfstream G100 was carrying two pilots, two medical staff, a patient and a relative, Clarence Togeretz, director of flight operations for Canada-based Latitude Air Ambulance, told Canadian public broadcaster CBC.

The four crew members were Canadian and the two passengers were Bermudian, according to authorities.

In a statement released Sunday, Latitude Air Ambulance said: “Given the information shared by authorities and the conclusion of the search and rescue phase, we must now face the heartbreaking reality that all four members of our Latitude team, our patient and the patient’s family escort, who were on board Heartbeat 104, are presumed to be deceased. »

Attention focused on what happened in the plane’s final minutes, when flight tracking data showed a steep descent and air traffic controllers struggled to reestablish contact.

Authorities have not determined what caused the plane to go down.

The plane had flown to Bermuda to pick up the patient and was heading to Boston Logan International Airport.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard around 2 a.m. (0600 GMT) Saturday after contact with the plane was lost.

Lake said at a news conference Sunday that the water around the debris was about 80 to 90 feet (24 to 27 meters) deep.

He offered his condolences to the families of those on board and thanked the agencies involved in the operation.

Latitude Air Ambulance specializes in medical evacuation and repatriation flights, transporting patients home from other countries.

The company says its missions are normally carried out by two pilots and medical personnel.
