“There hasn’t been a moment since that night that I haven’t felt pain,” Pike said, adding that the pain is both “physical and emotional.”
“I had not considered life beyond that night and I am deeply hurt by the incompetence that put so many people in this terrible situation,” Pike said.
Pike and her boyfriend tortured, stabbed and beat to death a 19-year-old classmate in 1995. As Pike was 18 at the time, she was sentenced to death.
The victim’s mother came from Florida to witness Pike’s execution.
Pike said she “continues to think” of the victim’s family and the “terrible pain and loss they have endured.”
Pike’s lawyers say the two separate doses of the deadly drug phenobarbital given to her on September 30 may have failed to kill her because the drug did not enter her bloodstream. Instead, it accumulated in his arms, leaving them burned and blistered.
Pike was hospitalized and unconscious for days after the botched execution.
Despite his ordeal, Pike is still condemned to die and is held in solitary confinement in the meantime.
His legal team asked a federal judge to allow him to interact with other prisoners, saying his isolation following his failed execution caused “significant psychological harm and trauma.”
His legal team also asked Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to change his sentence to life in prison.
Last week, however, Lee told reporters that he “suspects” his sentence will be the same as before, “unless the courts decide otherwise.”
The failed execution has sparked new scrutiny of how Tennessee carries out death sentences.
Tennessee’s governor called an independent review of the execution failure and postponed the state’s other planned lethal injection this year.
Frank Strada, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Corrections, announced his resignation following the failed execution of Pike.
