US withdraws forces in Iraq as balance of power shifts to Iran

BAGHDAD — U.S. military forces prepare to leave their bases in Iraq on Wednesday after two decades of U.S. involvement that led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians and thousands of U.S. troops, and now leaves a battered but increasingly influential Iran at the center of the region’s future.
