Vibe-Coders have arrived for Nintendo, which won’t end well

Comments Off on Vibe-Coders have arrived for Nintendo, which won’t end well

Recent weeks have seen an unquantifiable number of emulators“native” PC Portsweird Minecraft encounter Ancient Ring mix modsAnd web browser game ports suddenly went live, which were linked to the latest Claude update, Opus 5.5. Yet while vibe-coding aficionados have happily decompiled and created ports of games such as call of Duty Black Ops, Halo: CEAnd Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityClaude-assisted ports of Nintendo games didn’t make headlines.

However, while there seem to be fewer examples of AI-decompiled Nintendo ports than Xbox and PlayStation ports, there are still a few examples, it’s just people being a little more clever in their advertising. An understandable tactic, given Nintendo’s notoriously contentious history.

For example, you may have seen dozens of recent examples of non-Nintendo games suddenly being ported to the Nintendo Switch. Obviously, these aren’t Nintendo IPs, so Nintendo isn’t looking for them. Several properties owned by Nintendo are currently being decompiled and ported to PC, as Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sun, the Nintendo 3DS version of Majora’s Mask, and, perhaps most worryingly (at least for Nintendo), Super Mario Odyssey. Likewise, the native PC ports of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also go around X.

Although most of these projects have yet to draw the ire of Nintendo’s legal team, at least one ambient-coded project has apparently caught their attention: a web browser port of Super Mario 64. Oliver Sauter’s Claude-coded multiplayer version of Nintendo’s 1996 platformer has been partially “disabled in response to a report from the copyright holder” on Xalthough the web page hosting the port is still active.

So why was this one flagged, when all these other AI-assisted ports of much newer Nintendo titles remain untouched? Well, for starters, some haven’t even been released yet, so there’s nothing Nintendo can issue a takedown notice against. However, regarding those that have been released, the deciding factor seems to be where you can download them.

For example, the “native” PC version of Super Mario Odyssey can only be downloaded via Discord. Nintendo has successfully targeted and subpoenaed Discord servers formerly hosting Nintendo emulators and ROMsbut the process is not as quick as simply issuing a takedown notice against publication X.

Then there are all the AI-assisted ports hosted on GitHub, which bring us to the Nintendo Switch emulator Suyu. In August 2026, Nintendo succeeds wiped hundreds of Suyu forks from GitHub. Nintendo apparently used its successful lawsuit against the Yuzu emulator as legal justification, as Suyu is based on a fork of Yuzu named Eden.

However, while Suyu’s pitchforks were being purged, Suyu himself remains on GitHub. This is important because Claude-assisted Suyu v0.0.4 has been released last monthand it allows users to “export their games’ CPU code into recompiled C, which could be used to facilitate porting or reverse engineering of Switch games.”

Smash Ultimate gets a native PC port, no emulator required.

The open source ssbu-recomp project uses static recompilation to transform Super Smash Bros. Ultimate into a native Windows program.

In short, the majority of these decompiled Nintendo ports owe their existence to Suyu v0.0.4. But if Suyu is based on Eden, which is a fork of Yuzu, and Nintendo justified its previous legal withdrawals against Suyu by its legal victory against Yuzu… then how has the GitHub for Suyu v0.0.4 not already been removed from orbit by Nintendo’s legal team?

As the Suyu team explains in a lengthy “Legal notices» on their GitHub, they believe that the 2024 lawsuit against Tropic Haze LLC, the company behind the Yuzu emulator, does not apply to them: “The injunction binds the named parties and those who act in concert with them. It does not rewrite the DMCA or convert the act of writing an emulator that requires user-provided keys into a strict liability offense.

I’m not a legal expert, so I don’t know if Suyu’s defense is as strong as they think. Still, if that’s the case, perhaps that explains why Nintendo hasn’t yet managed to remove Suyu and, by extension, its decompiled Nintendo ports from the Internet.

As for non-Suyu ports of Nintendo games, this may have more to do with GitHub’s own stance on DMCA claims. Although GitHub has reported a “record” number of DMCA takedowns in 2025, it maintains that it errs on the side of its developers, as GitHub says. promises that it continues to “protect the interests of developers against excessive and ambiguous takedown requests.”

This may mean that all of these Claude-assisted Nintendo ports are simply being reviewed by GitHub’s legal team, but I’d wager that it actually means that GitHub is currently inundated with DMCA notices and therefore has a bit of a backlog to catch up on.
