Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has been released from hospital and is “doing well” after collapsing at the club’s training ground.

Kompany, 40, was rushed to hospital last Friday after falling ill while watching the club’s second team train.

The cause was identified as meningeal irritation – an inflammation of the protective membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

“Given the circumstances, he is doing well,” Max Eberl, the club’s board member for sports, told German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday.

“He was released from the hospital today. This is the biggest and best news for all of us.”

No timetable has been set for Kompany’s return and Bayern said on Saturday it would be a matter of “weeks, not days” before the former Manchester City defender returns to the bench.

England assistant coach Aaron Danks took over in Kompany’s absence and oversaw the 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday.

Kompany was suffering from a virus days before his collapse and had missed some of the team’s training sessions.

The Belgian missed a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal last Tuesday, but was then on the touchline for Wednesday’s game.

“It was a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication,” Eberl said ahead of Bayern’s German Cup match against Magdeburg.

“I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, functioning at 100% very soon.”

Current leaders Bayern will face title rival Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
