Jac Schaeffer is developing a new “Stargate” TV series for Amazon MGM Studios, Variety learned exclusively from sources.
The project is part of Schaeffer’s overall deal with Amazon MGM, announced earlier this year. Reportedly, a writers room is expected to open soon. Alongside Schaeffer, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures will executive produce the project.
Representatives for Amazon and Schaeffer declined to comment.
This will be Amazon’s second attempt at a new “Stargate” series. It was previously reported that Martin Gero was working on a new television entry in the sci-fi franchise, but that project ultimately didn’t come to fruition.
Schaeffer is no stranger to the genre world, given her previous success with the hit series “WandaVision” for Marvel Studios and Disney+. The show was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on Disney+, with Marvel stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as Wanda and Vision from the Marvel films. He went on to earn 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations as well as numerous other accolades. It was one of the most loved and loved TV shows of 2021.
Schaeffer then created the “WandaVision” spinoff “Agatha All Along” starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, reprising her role from “WandaVision.” Schaeffer was the showrunner, writer and executive producer of this show in addition to directing. Prior to her time at Marvel, she wrote the screenplay for the Disney animated feature “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” as well as the 2019 Anne Hathaway-Rebel Wilson comedy “The Hustle,” which was a remake of the 1980s comedy feature “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.”
She is repped by Curate, CAA and attorney Erik Hyman.
“Stargate” was originally released as a 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The film was followed by the hit series “Stargate SG-1,” which aired for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge, among others. The spin-off “Stargate Atlantis” then aired for five more seasons between 2004 and 2008.
