TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Toledo Fire & Rescue has issued an evacuation order for people within a one-mile radius of 1050 Progress Ave. due to a release of hazardous materials at MC Tank around 10:48 p.m. Tuesday. Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, TFRD added a three-mile shelter in place.

Firefighters are asking everyone in the area to shelter in place by staying indoors, closing all windows and doors, and turning off ventilation systems that bring in outside air.

TFRD Pvt. Sheldon Collins said the tank was leaking to the ground outside the facility.

Sterling Pipe & Tube was evacuated. TFRD initially said several streets in the area were blocked, including Enterprise Boulevard between Stickney Avenue and Benore Road. Nearby railways were also closed.

TFRD is asking the public not to call 911 regarding the HAZMAT leak. Officials say dispatchers are overloaded with calls regarding this incident, which is interfering with other emergency calls. If you have questions or need non-emergency help related to the HAZMAT situation, call Engage Toledo instead.

Collins said there was a chemical in the air. He has not been identified at this time.

The chemical plume is moving and reducing visibility on Toledo area roads. Drivers are advised to use caution and drive slowly.

Red Cross and TARTA buses are in Meijer, east of Alexis, to transport people from the area, according to the city of Toledo.

The Raintree Village mobile home park and Alexis Addition neighborhood are located in the evacuation zone. Washington Township officials are working to evacuate residents from Raintree Village.
