Watch Sam Cosmi Kick the Pylon in Trending Video After Commanders’ Stunning Tie Against Giants

No one on the Washington Commanders was particularly happy after the team botched the final play in overtime against the New York Giants, letting time run out and preventing a potential game-winning field goal attempt.

Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi expressed his frustrations on a goal line pylon:

The Commanders had pushed the ball to the New York Giants 25-yard line with just 15 seconds left in overtime, well within range of a Drew Stevens field goal. But Washington opted to run another play, apparently for one of three reasons: either to get a little closer, get the ball to Stevens’ preferred hash, or to run the clock down as far as possible to ensure the Giants didn’t get the ball on a miss.

But quarterback Jayden Daniels took a sack after a strange scramble and, with the team’s receivers running down the field and the rest of Washington’s players taking their time to reset, the clock ticked down to zero. It appeared Daniels and his teammates thought they had one timeout left.

It was a complete disaster, costing Washington a win and dropping their record to just 1-3-1 on the season.

“We just have to communicate that, that’s all,” Daniels told reporters when asked if he was aware the team was missing a timeout. “It starts with me communicating with the entire offense across the huddle. And I think everyone will say that from top to bottom.”

“That last sequence…throw it out of bounds, time it, give yourself a chance to kick,” added head coach Dan Quinn. “We’re proud of those moments at the end of games. And after the first down, we always try to get more for the kick, and the right decision, honestly, is we can go there sooner. Let’s not put ourselves in that situation. And that’s my responsibility, no one else’s.”

From the coaching staff to the players on the field, this was one of the worst clock management situations you’ll ever see, costing Washington a much-deserved victory.
