
Weekend of wet weather and threat of flash flooding for millions in southeast
Parts of the Southeast are under a Level 2 of 4 flash flood threat this weekend as a surge of tropical moisture moves across the region. Some areas, especially those closest to the Gulf Coast, are expected to receive 2 to 3 inches of rain or more. Get the forecast:
Weekend washout is on the horizon for parts of the Southern states and Gulf Coast, bringing an increased risk of flash flooding through the weekend for Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
Rain began Friday in the South, but on Saturday Gulf moisture pushed northward by energy from the upper layers of the western Gulf will move into the region.

As moisture rises northward, it hits a wall of high pressure, creating another dynamic rain event.

The highest rain totals through Monday will be over Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas, where widespread rain of 2 to 3 inches is likely, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
The closer to the Gulf, the higher the rain totals, with 3 to 5 inches or more likely along the southern coasts of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi extending to the Florida Panhandle, where a Level 2 of 4 flash flood threat is in effect Saturday.

On Sunday, the flood threat moves east and extends much further north into Georgia as well as the Carolinas. The entire state of Alabama and most of Mississippi are also included in the Level 2 of 4 threat.
It’s not all bad news with these heavy rain forecasts. Most of the region experiences some level of drought.
Louisiana has seen a 5% increase in drought conditions since this time last week, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

Cities like Shreveport are more than 3 inches below their September average and heading into October on the wrong side of the scale.

By Sunday, a weak area of low pressure will develop along the mid-Atlantic and move up the East Coast. This unsettled weather will allow some rain showers to develop across the region, leading to another gloomy Sunday for millions of people.
