First reactions to Brian Duffield’s survival thriller Whale fall have hit social media, and it appears that lead actor Austin Abrams’ banner year continues, even as the characters he plays continue to suffer in more elaborate and gruesome ways.
20th Century Studios held screenings for Whale fall last week, including a gala screening in London. Full reviews of the film are under embargo until October 14, with Whale fall in theaters October 16.
I just got demolished. resident EvilAbrams plays another ordinary man having the worst day ever. Whale fall. The film’s synopsis reads: After the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped in his womb with only an hour of oxygen, Jay realizes that the hard-earned lessons his father passed on to him could be the key to his escape.
In addition to Abrams and Brolin, the cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. Duffield wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, based on Kraus’ 2023 novel of the same name.
Duffield’s previous directing efforts include the acclaimed 2023 sci-fi horror film Nobody will save you (which criminally streamed straight to Hulu) and the 2020 coming-of-age dark comedy film Spontaneous. He also wrote Jane has a gun (2015), Underwater (2020) and Love and monsters (2020).

I really didn’t know what to expect from #Whalefall but I had a hell of a time watching it! Austin Abrams trying to escape a sperm whale’s intestine was more stressful than I thought.
See this on a large format like RPX for the full experience! pic.twitter.com/Y1g7UPFox4

Austin Abrams’ back must be sore this month. after directing Resident Evil (2026) mostly solo, he’s directing another thriller #Whalefall as a guy trapped in a whale’s stomach
this movie is tense, disgusting, and disney somehow manages to make it work pic.twitter.com/pbtrnkziGK

Brian Duffield’s #Whalefall is a blast, and it firmly cements Austin Abrams as one of fall’s most exciting rising stars. This is a film that goes way beyond the gimmick of having a guy stuck inside a whale, as Duffield cleverly makes these moments evolve and intensify… pic.twitter.com/DAIAynvqQA

WHALEFALL is an intense rollercoaster of a survival thriller, once again featuring an incredible performance from Austin Abrams. The film is at its best when it puts you in claustrophobic and harrowing scenarios that will have you wincing at the screen. However, sometimes it takes a… pic.twitter.com/2KKsuvpu2B

#Whalefall by Brian Duffield is a new claustrophobic classic. Austin Abrams shines in this oceanic family film.
Coupled with a stellar performance from Josh Brolin, the film features a poignant storyline and phenomenal CGI effects. It’s an unforgettable moment! @20th century UK pic.twitter.com/vkZ2u4tIHh

Whalefall: Part sentimental (ridiculously at times), part cruelly devastating, but the weight and authenticity of its drama and the clarity of its action never live up to its insane survival thriller premise. There is a whole school of Ad Astra. pic.twitter.com/8NMfwbggDt

Austin Abrams, who I love like my son, finds himself in increasingly horrible situations in the incredibly stressful #Whalefall. It all becomes a bit of a mystical whale at the end but I dug it. I’m not sure anyone would have bet Abrams would be Hollywood’s next biggest star, but he’s magnetic pic.twitter.com/pbroTBh5x2

Like a messy interior space, #Whalefall is guts, drool, and a great time. But more than just a man-in-a-whale movie, the whole thing is supported by an emotional core that will make you cry. Abrams and Brolin are great, while Duffield comes out on top. pic.twitter.com/6Zr8Cg9M92

I fell down the majestic gullet of @BrianDuffield’s #Whalefall tonight. What a wild ride. I don’t think my knees stopped shaking all the time. A gigantic, terrifying and moving spectacle. What movies are made for. Go dive in! pic.twitter.com/Hh4n79ssGr

#whalefall Men will literally get eaten by a whale instead of going to therapy. Whenever it focuses on Austin Abrams going through horrors, it’s an incredibly entertaining film. But the boilerplate plot about father-son trauma is a chore, and the ending is absurd (derogatory)

#whalefall was enjoyable! At his best when Austin Abrams is on screen with killer sound design. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen

I wanted to like #Whalefall more – the set pieces are scary – but the film becomes way too sentimental at the end.
It’s still worth watching on the big screen for the incredible sound design and another winning performance from Austin Abrams. pic.twitter.com/6tuRlvjIu1

It’s been a long time since I attended one of these events, life got in the way! We had an absolute blast watching #whalefall, wholesome, heartfelt and so WILD. Wow. pic.twitter.com/NDPSqlIz0N

Whalefall: Overall mixed (whale stuff, terrifying, stressful; father-son stuff, saccharine) – but Austin Abrams’ ability to convey fear, when his performance should ostensibly be inhibited by glasses and a breathing apparatus, is a stunning piece of work.

WHALEFALL: the most inexplicably boring film of 2026? Half dimly lit survival thriller where you can’t make out a single fucking action sequence, half boring, dad drama with flat characterization/performances, all parts are tests of patience.
