What is pneumonic plague and how will we know if it is spreading in Russia?
After reports that the death of a lab technician may be linked to pneumonic plague in Russia, U.S. officials said they were monitoring the situation closely.
The lab technician is a 28-year-old woman who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia and the Far East, which was established in the 1930s as an anti-plague organization and later expanded its activities to other very dangerous diseases. The woman died after being diagnosed with pneumonia of “unknown” origin, according to public health agency Rospotrebnadzor.
