DES MOINES, IA —

Three people were injured in a shooting Thursday morning at the United States Postal Service in Des Moines.

A Des Moines Police Department spokesperson said the suspected shooter has been arrested.

The victims were all transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Des Moines police, the shooting was first reported around 9:10 a.m. and took place on the second floor of the establishment.

Second Avenue in both directions is temporarily closed while the investigation continues. Drivers should use E. 14th Street or 6th Avenue as alternatives.

Governor Kim Reynolds posted on X at 10:05 a.m. that she was in contact with the Department of Public Safety.

“The suspected shooter is in custody and the investigation is ongoing. We are monitoring the situation and our prayers are with everyone involved. We are grateful for the immediate response from law enforcement.”

Des Moines schools temporarily in secure status

Des Moines Public Schools temporarily became secure Thursday morning following the shooting. In a Facebook post, DMPS officials said:

Around 9:20 a.m., police reported a shooting at the downtown post office located on the corner of 2nd Street and University Avenue.

Des Moines Police immediately notified our staff and nearby Carver Elementary School, DMPS Welcome Center and Central Nutrition Center were placed in a safe position. A secure system means that no one is allowed to enter or leave the building.

Police reported the suspect was in custody nearby as of 9:30 a.m. and is actively investigating at the post office. They informed our staff that it was safe to resume entry and exit of people at Carver Elementary School, the DMPS Welcome Center, and the Central Nutrition Center at 10:00 a.m. Security has been lifted in these buildings.
