White Sox fans angry with lame first pick for ALDS Game 3 after writers tease big name
The Chicago White Sox are suddenly the talk of the Second City.
After years, even decades, of futility, the South Siders finally have the type of young, exciting team that fans love. And better yet, they are GOOD, a young and exciting team.
Chicago jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over their division rivals, the Cleveland Guardians, winning both games on the road and putting on a huge game at Rate Field. A huge Game 3, not only because the White Sox had the opportunity to clinch an ALCS appearance, but also for the opportunity to do it at home.

As hard as it may seem, a victory in Game 3 would be the first win in front of home White Sox fans since… 1906. Three years after the first flight. A year before the first color photography. And two years before Ford launched the very first Model T.

And the fans were ready. Rate Field was packed for the first pitch, with a jubilant, electric atmosphere that seemed virtually impossible just two years ago.

They were even more excited when online speculation began that a big name from Chicago would take to the mound for the ceremonial first pitch. Some were thinking of former President Barack Obama, perhaps Michael Jordan, who of course played with the White Sox, Derrick Rose, or even the team’s most famous fan: Pope Leo XIV.
MLB.com’s Scott Merkin pushed anticipation to a fever pitch when he posted on X that there would be a “big name” heading to the mound. “No clues have been given, so go ahead,” he said.
Just imagine, taking your young child to the biggest White Sox home playoff game of their life, literally, and telling them to expect to see a huge local personality there, too. The Pope? Michael Jordan? A former president? Another Chicago legend? A popular White Sox player?
That anticipation, after spending a fortune on playoff tickets and battling traffic and stadium security to get to the building and it’s… Belmont Cameli.

Well, we looked it up, and yes, we still don’t know what they were thinking. Cameli is apparently an actor best known for playing a hockey player in an Amazon series, “Off Campus.”
Maybe Merkin said he wouldn’t give any clues because he had no idea who Belmont Cameli was.

To be fair to the White Sox, he’s from Naperville, Illinois, so there’s a local connection there. It’s also a huge disappointment to go into a game expecting a big name and find a mostly unknown actor. A user on X posted a common review.
“Are you telling me that Sox fans thought the Pope of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church was throwing out the first pitch today and it was just a guy from one of the most exciting hockey shows?” says the message.

To her credit, at least Cameli gave it her all.
The frenzied White Sox crowd quickly got over the disappointment, as they took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. But the Guardians fought back, scoring nine points and keeping Chicago’s powerful offense at bay. The day started with a big disappointment and ended with a 9-3 loss to set up game four.

But hey, the good news for White Sox fans is that the team has another opportunity to bring out a total nobody to throw out the first pitch of Game 4 on Thursday night.
