Why Richard Sherman picks 49ers to beat Seahawks in Week 5 – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
The 49ers started the 2026 NFL season 4-0, but the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are looking to prove why they were the top dog in the NFC last season.
Former cornerback Richard Sherman took to his podcast to share his predictions for the crucial Week 5 matchup.
“I think the San Francisco 49ers find a way to win this game,” the former All-Pro said on “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” “The San Francisco 49ers are the number one team in the National Football League.”
Much of the 49ers’ success this season has been due to the exceptional play of quarterback Brock Purdy. “Mr. Irrelevant” is an early MVP candidate with a league-leading QBR of 89.7.
“I think Brock Purdy is on pace,” Sherman continued. “He’s playing the best football of his life.”
According to Pro Football Reference, Purdy ranks No. 1 in NFL history in adjusted yards gained per pass attempt (8.8). Much of the offensive success came on third down.
“They convert 57.5 percent of their first downs (1st in the NFL),” Sherman said. “On the other hand, the Seattle Seahawks are 31st in conversion rate. They only convert 31 percent of their third downs; that’s a problem. I think it’s going to have a huge impact on this game.”
These two defenses were excellent. Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris makes the 49ers look elite, even with the injuries piling up. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald’s defense hasn’t slowed down in its quest for perfection.
“Defensively, the Seattle Seahawks have been really good,” concluded Sherman. “They are fifth in points allowed per game and first in yards allowed per game. The 49ers win this game 24-21.”
The crowd will be a factor at Lumen Field, but the 49ers should be able to overcome adversity, according to the legendary corner who played for both teams.
