Unmissable innovations at the cutting edge of science and technology

In early October, Finnish authorities ordered Google-affiliated data center developer Tuike Finland Oy to immediately suspend illegal logging of some 1,300 acres of forest. The tech giant was given a week to write a report explaining its actions, which quickly became a flashpoint for Europe’s growing outrage over the data center boom.

As anger grew, journalists entered the picture – and what they found was a clear example of the impact of the AI revolution on the environment.

New report from Tutor shedding new light on the impacts of Google deforestation. After the 1,300 acres of pristine boreal forests were reduced to expanses of mud and stumps, the wildlife that once inhabited these woods were forced to leave.

At the kill site near the Finnish village of Otanmäki, the resulting loss of prey forced wolf packs to look for food elsewhere: in neighboring villages.

“Wolves entered the village because all the wild animals left the forest,” said Anni Ranta, a 53-year-old resident of Otanmäki. Tutor. “They fled.”

Although Ranta’s family has lived in the area for generations, the tumult has her considering whether to leave Otanmäki for good.

“I don’t want them here,” she continued of Google’s data centers. “I don’t want them in Finland at all. I don’t like the idea of AI and the world changing and the way it’s evolving. It’s happening too fast, too soon.”

Muhos resident Antti Jakonen put it in even starker terms. “It was done the wrong way. The American way. It makes no sense. It makes no sense,” he told the Tutor.

Sure enough, in Google’s home country, data center developers are increasingly battling with the natural world – and winning hands down.

In West Virginia, an endangered chestnut grove is threatened with being bulldozed to make way for a new large-scale Anthropic facility. Outside of Fort Wayne, part of Indiana’s once-abundant wetlands is being plowed up to accommodate a new Google data center. In southern New Jersey, a data center operator was recently fined $1 million after inspectors found 62 illegal gas generators spewing exhaust into the environment.

Wherever data centers are installed in the world, it seems that the destruction of natural resources is inevitable – and increasingly difficult for humanity to ignore.
