Woman says she dedicated 30 years to being a businesswoman, but now struggles to make ends meet

On TikTok we will find all kinds of micro-subcultures and fashion aesthetics. We see professional women, golden retriever boyfriends, pick-me girls, flirts, gamer boys and countless others. It’s true that it’s a little tiring.

But for many people, these trends reflect their actual lifestyle. Tradwives and their more recent cousins, “stay-at-home girlfriends,” directly demonstrate how some people choose to live, often romanticizing that lifestyle. Mel Ryder, a self-proclaimed “ex-tradeswoman” on TikTok is one of them, but her life was turned upside down when she could no longer count on her husband to finance her.

Tradwives represent an aesthetic and lifestyle sought by many, but it doesn’t always work out as expected.

Housewives, housewives and stay-at-home spouses are becoming an aesthetic trend on social media

Being a retailer is a lifestyle choice that deserves respect, like any other. At the same time, professionals have their say. While the concept of “tradwife” has been around for decades, the tradwife aesthetic became a social media trend in 2020. While people were confined to their homes, they began sharing short-form content featuring cooking, bread baking, and a cottagecore aesthetic.
It eventually evolved into a movement, with accounts like Nara Smith and Hannah Neeleman becoming the faces of modern business content. But ultimately, it’s not a new concept. Throughout history, we can find many examples of what we today call “tradwives.” In the 1950s, for example, postwar government initiatives promoted the ideal of the suburban housewife, encouraging women to return home and leave their factory jobs to returning soldiers.
However, a closer look reveals that sociologists often describe this lifestyle as an idealized, sanitized, and highly organized version of domestic life and stay-at-home parenting. This representation can erase the realities of unpaid domestic work, which can lead to physical exhaustion and even social devaluation. For many, it is also a conduit to ideological concerns, such as anti-feminist rhetoric, far-right politics, and gender ideologies.

But sociologists and lawyers warn all those who wish to achieve the same way of life

However, the biggest vulnerability of stay-at-home mothers, artisan women, housewives and all the rest is financial dependence. Granted, TikTok professionals rarely share the entirety of their social media earnings or the wealth they’ve accumulated, but they are substantial. Enough to fund their leisure, housekeeping, and time-consuming pastimes they enjoy, like making food from scratch, so that ultimately they have their own safety net.
However, most stay-at-home partners have much less financial independence and often leave household authority and decision-making power to the primary breadwinner. In a traditional household, this role generally falls to the man. And housewives without work experience or independent assets can be particularly vulnerable in the event of divorce or abandonment, as was the case for Ryder.
Jacqueline Harounian, a New York-based lawyer, also warns traders that the law is changing. In previous decades, courts often intervened to provide long-term financial security to the partner managing the household in the event of a marriage breakdown. This is no longer always the case. In some U.S. states, the higher-earning spouse can retain control of their income, while the financially dependent partner can only receive alimony for a limited period of time.
So, with that in mind, what can Mel do? In a follow-up video, the now-working mother confirmed she had contacted a lawyer. Although she cannot receive immediate financial support due to her husband’s financial situation, legal experts point out that courts can still review money withdrawn from joint savings or retirement accounts. She might also be entitled to a larger share of the remaining marital assets, such as their house.

His future therefore does not look bleak, but the legal battle that awaits him will probably be difficult.

Netizens strongly advised the woman to seek a lawyer to manage her finances.
