Becerra, a Democrat, was well ahead of Republican Steve Hilton in the days leading up to the Nov. 3 midterm elections. He served as California Attorney General and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Biden administration.
Hilton contributed as a Fox News commentator and served as director of strategy for then-British Prime Minister David Cameron.
In late October, Becerra sat down to talk about some of his goals if elected. They include a new income tax on California’s wealthiest, health care costs for big businesses and changes to the state’s high-speed rail project.
Because state law prohibits people from holding the office for more than two terms, Gov. Gavin Newsom will be out at the end of this year and would not have been able to run again anyway.
Xavier Becerra responds: “Yes, we did. »
Becerra took the stage to chants of “Sí, se puede” after being projected to win the California gubernatorial race.
“What a great night to be a Californian. What a great night to be an American, to be the son of immigrants from a union home. To be in victory with all of you,” he said.
He said the last two years had been “difficult” and “felt like a mission impossible”.
“We knew it was a mission: necessary,” he said.
Becerra then led the crowd in chanting “Sí, se puede.”
“Yes, we can. Yes, we did,” he said.
