Xbox staff among Microsoft’s 60,000 employees offered voluntary redundancy
Microsoft offers voluntary departure to employees.
In a memo, Senior Vice President of Human Resources Amy Coleman announced that the limited-time Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) was open to “eligible personnel from participating teams” in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and India at level 70 and below.
The Verge reports that up to 60,000 employees could be eligible, and sources familiar with the matter say staff from many teams are eligible, including “AI Experiments, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows + Devices, Xbox, Finance and HR.”
Microsoft’s cloud + AI teams, MicrosoftAI and corporate affairs, external and legal are “partially participating”, according to sources.
“The voluntary separation offer is new to us,” Coleman wrote. “We will learn from this. At the same time, we will continue to help people focus on the work that matters most, learn new skills, and, when it makes sense, find new opportunities within Microsoft. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for every team or employee.
“These are some of the ways we are trying to meet different business needs while continuing to create opportunities for our own people to grow and contribute.”
Coleman added: “The voluntary separation offer reflects an important part of how we are evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter. This builds on what we learned earlier this year through the voluntary retirement program.
The voluntary retirement offer made earlier this year was limited to about 9,000 U.S. employees whose ages and years of service totaled at least 70.
The offer follows layoffs in July and September, primarily in Xbox and commercial sales. Other layoffs would also be planned.
