
Yankees Mistakes Lead to Game 2 Loss to Rays, Box Score Stats, Highlights and Updated MLB Postseason Bracket
Four errors paved the way for the New York Yankees’ 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, dropping them to 0-2 in the American League Divisional Series on the road.
With their backs against the wall and down 0-1, the Yankees entered as 1.5-point favorites over the Rays, according to , with Cam Schlittler starting on the mound.
Schlittler finished the regular season tied for third in MLB with 239 strikeouts, entering the postseason as one of the Yankees’ biggest weapons.
He confirmed that in his first postseason start, a win over the Boston Red Sox, allowing just two hits while striking out 10. But Monday was a different story, as he gave up seven hits, had just two strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.

Tampa Bay struck first, with its first three batters reaching base in the first inning. Yandy Díaz scored on a throwing error by second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. after Junior Caminero grounded on a fielder’s choice.
Schlittler and the Yankees escaped the bottom of the first with minimal damage, allowing one run despite a disastrous start that included three errors, stranding two runners in the corners.
The Yankees responded in the bottom of the third when Ben Rice launched a 372-foot solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
It was a busy fifth inning for the Rays.
With two runners in scoring position, Liam Hicks reached second to bring home Jonathan Aranda. Chandler Simpson followed with an RBI single after another Yankees error, giving Tampa Bay a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth and prompting the Yankees to retire Schlittler.
Building on their lead, Richie Palacios hit a two-run double, bringing home Trent Grisham and Simpson to extend Tampa Bay’s lead to 5-1.
Rice capped a big night with his second homer in the top of the eighth, accounting for both Yankees runs. But with one last chance in the ninth and trailing 5-2, New York lost to fall to 0-2 in the ALDS.
Both teams will travel to New York for Game 3, where the Yankees will look to avoid a sweep at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. The first pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
