Yankees shake up ALDS Game 3 schedule with season on the line
With their season on the line, the Yankees are shaking up their roster.
After Aaron Boone stuck with the same lineup of eight lefties for Games 1 and 2 of the ALDS against the Rays, with the only runs coming from two solo shots from Ben Rice, he mixed it up for Game 3 on Wednesday.
José Caballero starts at third base against Ryan McMahon and Anthony Volpe starts at second base against Jazz Chisholm Jr. as the Yankees try to avoid elimination against Rays right-hander Nick Martinez. Luis Garcia Jr. remains at first base.
Trent Grisham leads off and Austin Wells bats sixth.
McMahon didn’t contribute much offensively and then committed a defensive error on the first ball put into play in the bottom of the first inning Saturday night at Tropicana Field, the first of four the Yankees would make in Game 2.
This is Caballero’s first postseason start, against his former team in hopes that his speed and overall pesky nature can provide a spark while his glove should be just as solid at third base behind Max Fried.

Chisholm also made an error in that disastrous first inning, throwing a wild and ill-advised throw to first base while trying to turn a double play, as well as a high throw to second base on another play that wiped out any chance of a double play.
Volpe had started against Chisholm in Game 1 of the AL wild-card series against left-hander Payton Tolle, which Chisholm thought would upset him, although he played it later after winning the series.
García crushed a home run as part of a three-hit effort in Game 2 of the wild-card series, but otherwise stared at home plate for much of the last month.
