Best Buy wants you to remember the good old days, when video games were fun and nothing hurt, by hosting a midnight launch for the Ocarina of time remake and its limited edition Switch 2 console. Select stores in the US will have a limited supply of the console (via Wario64) and Switch 2 Pro controller, offering what could be the last chance to get these very nice pieces of hardware at retail prices.

Best Buy will open select stores late on November 5 at midnight ET for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Switch 2). “A limited number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Pro Controller will also be available”… pic.twitter.com/JOXopL5w2F

I can’t think of a time in recent memory where a game’s launch warranted a midnight release. Of course, the Switch 2 had its big midnight party a few years ago now, generating lines everywhere, including at my local GameStop. But making one for a video game release is certainly nostalgic. It is therefore logical that the game in question is Ocarina of time, THE Zelda game to end it all Zelda games. (Unless you are someone of my tastes who prefers Majora’s Maskthere are dozens of us!)

But if we’re honest, the hardware is probably more appealing than the game itself. Pre-orders for the console and Pro Controller are already sold out at Best Buy and Target, which means if you want one before the scalpers inevitably do what scalpers do, screwing up your sleep schedule might be your last and best bet, although I was able to add a console pre-order to my cart at Walmart so there might still be some available. Hell, you can’t even get your hands on pre-orders for the special edition carrying case, so the Ocarina the hype is definitely real.

I think we miss being part of a monoculture, and things like digital gaming and online shopping have fractured our communities a lot, so while I doubt it Ocarina will create the kind of lines that the Switch 2 did or even Halo 3 (my goodness, what a midnight release that was!), I hope this gets some people out. The good old days were pretty good for a reason.
