U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to bring diesel to the U.S. and global markets, a move he said would help ease soaring energy costs amid the war with Iran.

“Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the U.S. and global market, and an additional 500,000 tons during the month of November,” Trump said after his talks with Putin.

Responding to this announcement in an article on X, Zelenskyy wrote: “Gifts to Putin will bring neither peace nor any benefit to the civilized world.”

“Allowing Russia to sell oil products is an investment in a war that must end, not prolong. What is needed is real de-escalation with Russia on a reciprocal basis,” he added.

The US Treasury Department also announced it was issuing a temporary license allowing Russian diesel to access global markets.

The White House did not immediately say who would pay for Russian diesel or when supplies under the deal would be available. He also did not say whether other deliveries expected next month would arrive before the November 3 midterm elections.

Trump’s announcement comes just a month after he signed sweeping sanctions against Russia aimed at targeting its energy sector and other industries helping to finance its war in Ukraine.

The move raises questions about whether the White House will impose new sanctions on Russia this month, as required by bipartisan legislation targeting major importers of Russian oil and gas.

Trump made no mention of sanctions or Russia’s war in Ukraine, instead saying, “Lowering prices for Americans, especially our great farmers, ranchers and truckers, is my highest priority.” »

Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev on Friday republished the Treasury Department’s announcement and said that “cooperation between Russia and the United States in the field of diesel and energy will benefit the world.”
