A California boy who was once a healthy, football-loving teenager is now fighting to regain the use of his legs after a seemingly harmless mosquito bite triggered a devastating medical nightmare.

Joseph Vasquez, 13, of Long Beach, has been bedridden at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for three weeks after contracting West Nile virus and developing transverse myelitis, a rare neurological disease that causes severe inflammation of the spinal cord, according to a GoFundMe started by his family.

The frightening ordeal began with what seemed like ordinary mosquito bites, but quickly escalated into a life-altering medical crisis.

Joseph first developed a rash all over his body, mild headaches, leg pain and a mild fever. But his symptoms quickly worsened, eventually leaving him unable to move his legs.

The teenager also experienced excruciating abdominal pain, neck stiffness and loss of bladder and bowel control as his condition deteriorated.

Doctors initially diagnosed Joseph with transverse myelitis and began treating him with steroids. After days of intensive care and extensive testing, they determined that West Nile virus was the cause of these devastating complications.

Today, the boy who once spent his days playing football, hanging out with his cousins and cheering on the Dodgers, Raiders and Lakers faces an uncertain road to recovery.

“Today, Joseph faces challenges that no 13-year-old should ever have to face,” his family wrote about the fundraiser. “He has lost the use of his legs, lost control of his bladder and bowels, and suffers from excruciating nerve pain from his lower back down to his feet.”

The family said doctors warned that Joseph’s condition was extremely rare and that the research available to predict how his recovery might unfold was limited.

His mother, Maria Salazar, a widow and mother of three, remained at his bedside 24 hours a day. But the heartbreaking ordeal also created a financial crisis for the family.

As the sole breadwinner, Salazar was unable to work while caring for his hospitalized son, prompting his loved ones to seek donations to cover living expenses, medical costs, transportation and rehabilitation.

“We never imagined that something that started with what seemed like minor symptoms could change Joseph’s life so quickly,” the family wrote.

Joseph’s terrifying case comes as Los Angeles County grapples with an alarming rise in West Nile infections.

The county Department of Public Health reported 100 infections and five deaths this year, the highest number of cases recorded at the start of the mosquito season in nearly a decade.

Nearly all cases reported this year involved serious illness, with most patients requiring hospitalization, although health officials noted that milder infections often go undiagnosed.

“West Nile virus can cause serious illness, and the number of severe cases and deaths we are seeing this year is concerning,” warned Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis.

Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms, while about one in five people develop a fever, headache, body aches, or rash.

However, about one in 150 infected people develop severe illness, potentially involving the brain or spinal cord and causing paralysis.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment against the virus.

As peak mosquito season runs from June to November, health officials urge residents to use insect repellent, remove standing water and repair damaged screens.

Meanwhile, Joseph’s family is pleading for their prayers and support as the teen faces an uncertain future.

“We remain hopeful knowing that Joseph still has a long road ahead,” his family wrote.
