Vanillaware’s pristine track record could easily have been derailed with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim – a visual novel and strategy hybrid that is a far cry from the action RPGs the studio has become known for. But the finished product is arguably the developer’s most notable game to date. Fantastic characters and an utterly captivating narrative make 13 Sentinels a borderline masterpiece in terms of storytelling. A real treat for your eyes and your brain.

Arcade Paradise begins as a relatively derivative simulator-style title, but it blossoms into a brilliant tycoon. As you expand your laundromat into an arcade, you’ll discover all sorts of truly entertaining mini-games. With a hearty mix of management and retro gaming goodness, it’s one of the most addictive indie games in some time.

The spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s hugely popular Dark Souls property, Bloodborne fuses the incredibly satisfying combat of its predecessors with a frighteningly fast pace, resulting in the most intense action on PS4. Ripping Lovecraftian-like demons and larger-than-life bosses vie for your sawblade’s attention, as the dark districts of Yharnam intertwine. A steep difficulty curve can make this sometimes putrid escapade off-putting, but soldier through skin and sinew and you’ll discover a bloodbath worth immersing in.

A compelling combination of first-person puzzle-solving and roguelike elements, Blue Prince is a unique and deceptively deep adventure. Full of puzzles and secrets, you’ll discover or learn something new every time you make your way through the mysterious mansion. There is much more to this game than meets the eye, and for its most determined players, there is a high degree of satisfaction to be found in peeling back its many layers.

Building on the original in smart ways, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a bigger and better RPG. Telling a truly compelling character-driven story in a dark sci-fi universe, the game’s unique dice system forces you to take thoughtful risks with every action. You’ll explore various locations, all with plenty of characters to meet and choices to make, and challenging side missions flesh out an otherwise linear story. If you don’t mind a text-heavy game, this offers a gripping adventure.
$29.99/£24.99 (-50%)
Kronos: The New Dawn is a brilliant addition to the survival horror genre. In many ways it’s derivative, especially in terms of how it plays and how it feels. However, Bloober injected it with enough charm, curiosities, and weirdness to make it not just its own thing, but something almost endearing. With impeccable visuals, a haunting score, and a gripping, dark time-traveling mystery, Cronos: The New Dawn is a delightful piece of sci-fi horror.
$9.99/£7.74 (-50%)
If you’re nostalgic for PS1’s fixed-camera survival horror classics like Resident Evil, you need to play Crow Country right away. This spooky game has you exploring an abandoned theme park with dark secrets and horrible creatures hiding in the shadows. You’ll solve environmental puzzles, battle nightmarish entities, and piece together a mystery in this retro-style horror title that checks all the boxes.
$9.99/£7.99 (-60%)
Cult of the Lamb is an ingenious blend of rogue-lite action and devilishly addictive life simulation. In debt to an imprisoned malevolent god, you spend half the game defeating enemies, gathering resources, and rescuing animals. Then things change and your time turns to building a cult with various buildings and structures. There is an element of strategy to this half of the game, but it’s generally quite light, while the action is nice and snappy. The two sides of Cult of the Lamb feed off each other wonderfully and, combined with the cute cartoon visuals, it’s an incredibly fun and dangerously indulgent treat.
$19.99/£17.99 (-60%)
Days Gone Remastered changes Bend Studio’s underrated open world in more ways than expected. With a new lighting engine, the tension is significantly amped up, while the new Horde Assault mode lets you focus on the version’s most enjoyable moments: those white-knuckle showdowns against hundreds and hundreds of Freakers.
$24.99/£22.49 (-50%)
Capcom has brought back its cult classic in style with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. You’re stuck in an undead-infested mall and you only have a short time before things really go south. With modernized visuals, simplified gameplay, and other new features, this is now arguably the definitive version of the zombie action title.
$11.99/£11.99 (-80%)
Arkane Studios is known for immersive simulations like Dishonored, and with Deathloop, the developer takes that formula in a bold new direction. Play as an assassin caught in a time loop on an island full of disdainful characters, your job is to eliminate them all in a single cycle, otherwise you’ll have to start again. The joy of the game lies in slowly determining the correct sequence of events that need to take place so that you can crack the code and break the loop. The greater emphasis on action combined with super fun powers makes it feel like a supercharged Dishonored. The looping mechanics and threat of player invasion create some tension, and it’s all delivered with a fantastic ’60s aesthetic.

Arkane’s first game, Dishonored, remains one of his best, and this Definitive Edition lets you play an optimal version. Playing as a supernatural assassin in a corrupted world, you explore a series of large, open-ended stages that truly allow you to approach them in your own way. A combination of excellent mission design, a flexible suite of powers and weapons, and an intriguing story make this a true modern classic. The Definitive Edition rounds it all out with improved visuals and all of the game’s DLC, making it a great package.

This enduring charm of Dragon Quest is especially powerful in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, a thoughtful repackaging of a classic RPG. With its quality of life additions and stunning 3D visuals, it’s easy to argue that this is the definitive form of adventure, even if some of its structural weaknesses remain in place.
