The Kentucky Department of Public Health has confirmed an ongoing measles outbreak in the state, with the total number of cases at 104.

The measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, vaccine is the best protection against measles, according to the Laurel County Health Department.

People should make sure they and their families are up to date on their vaccines, the department said, and know the signs and symptoms, including fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and rash.

In terms of vaccination status, the department said people should be protected against measles if they:

  • Were born before 1957
  • Received two doses of the MMR vaccine
  • Have documented immunity against measles (IgG+)

If someone does not know their vaccination status, they can access it via a vaccination record information request.

According to the Laurel County Health Department, measles is highly contagious and can cause serious health complications. Anyone suspected of having been exposed or developing symptoms is asked to contact their healthcare provider or local health department for advice.
