A’ja Wilson would not be sanctioned by the WNBA for a confrontation with fans during Aces vs. Fever
Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson will not face any disciplinary action from the WNBA, according to Chantel Jennings and Annie Costabile of The Athletic, after confronting a fan during a 99-89 loss to the Indiana Fever on Tuesday.
According to that report, “Game officials on the field determined that Wilson was in the area of the field – what is called a player escape route – adjacent to the post rather than the stands. Based on that determination, the officials decided there was no reason to be ejected.”
Wilson, however, received a technical foul. After the match, she said the man pointed at her and walked toward her.
“I’m trying to play my game… but if I’m just walking, I just made a mistake, I get cold and I see a man coming towards me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t care what you said,” she said. “I don’t care how you said it, the tone. It’s unacceptable. You’re not coming towards me. You should never sit down and point the finger at me. It’s unacceptable.”
The fan was initially removed from his seat by security, but was allowed to return after Fever determined he had not violated the fan code of conduct.
“I didn’t exactly see what happened,” Aces head coach Becky Hammon told reporters after the game. “I kind of saw the aftermath. I’ve never seen Wilson act like that. So whatever was done, I can tell you she felt very disrespected at that point. I’ve never seen her really react like that. So whatever it is, it has no place, I don’t think, in an arena. There are rules and procedures. I think there’s a certain etiquette that players and fans have to have. respect, but clearly the lines are being crossed, and that seems to be happening here (at Indiana). I can’t speak specifically to what was said or what was done. But I can speak to the character of our players and the things that they’re dealing with.
The third match between the teams will be played on Thursday evening at 9 p.m. ET (USA). The winner will face either the Dallas Wings or Golden State Valkyries in the next round.
