David Bahnsen discusses reports that OpenAI’s annualized revenues failed to meet expectations. Bahnsen warns of systemic risks to the artificial intelligence ecosystem due to massive capital commitments and negative free cash flow.

Alphabet and Microsoft reported growing demand for artificial intelligence in their quarterly results on Wednesday, and the tech giants continue to invest billions of dollars in the infrastructure needed to support this growing industry.

Google parent Alphabet expects capital spending to increase significantly in 2027 after forecasting between $195 billion and $205 billion in spending this year, highlighting the enormous costs associated with expanding AI infrastructure.

Alphabet reported third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25% from a year earlier, while Microsoft reported first-quarter revenue of $92.3 billion, an increase of 19%.

Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion, an increase of 103% from the previous year, while Microsoft’s Azure cloud business saw revenue growth of 48%.

“Our infrastructure and AI solutions are the key drivers of cloud growth, and our customers see us as the leading provider here, so there is huge demand,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said during the company’s earnings conference call.

“We are working hard to bring more capacity online to meet this long-term demand.”

Alphabet spent about $51.4 billion in capital expenditures during the third quarter, more than double the amount spent a year earlier, with much of the investment directed toward technical infrastructure supporting its AI and cloud computing businesses.

Anat Ashkenazi, chief financial officer, also warned that Google Cloud could face margin pressure in the near term as the company relies on third-party computing capabilities to meet demand.

Microsoft also highlighted strong demand for AI services, with Microsoft Cloud revenue increasing 30% to $63.9 billion.

The company’s remaining business performance obligation, a measure of future revenue incurred in its business operations that has not yet been recognized, soared 73% to $677 billion.

The findings highlight the challenge facing both companies as they seek to capitalize on the growing demand for AI while managing the substantial costs of building the infrastructure needed to support it.
