AMD will bring FSR 4 to handhelds by the end of 2026
It’s already possible to get AMD’s framerate-enhancing FSR 4 boost on handhelds as old as the Steam Deck – but in June, AMD reserved the right to disappoint portable gamers by not officially introducing FSR 4 to older handhelds. Now, AMD’s consumer chip boss, Jack Huynh, says he will bringing the technology to some handhelds by the end of the year.
Which handheld computers? We still don’t know if this will happen existing handhelds, or if you need a new one to get it, as this comes alongside the announcement that AMD is releasing a new FSR4 compatible chip.
“We will expand the FSR4 technology based on AI and machine learning, which was first introduced on existing external graphics cards, to the entire product line, including APUs, gaming laptops and wearable devices, by the end of this year,” Huynh told a Korean publication. The Elect (via Google Translate). “We plan to respond in two directions: the launch of existing APUs and new product lines.”
Back when AMD was throwing some cold water on the idea of FSR 4 for existing handhelds, said director David McAfee Tom’s Guide that “we want to make sure the experience and quality are right” and that AMD would need “a sufficient amount of compute in this product” for FSR 4 to make sense. Perhaps some older handheld computer chips will qualify, while other older handheld computer chips will not.
AMD did not immediately respond to a request for clarification of Huynh’s statement.
