Everyone knows that it takes a full moon for a person to turn into a werewolf. What they may not know is that the same goes for the new marketing for Robert Eggers’ new film, Werwulf. The first trailer was released on June 29. A new poster was released on July 29. The first product was released on August 28. And today, September 26, there is another trailer. What do all these dates have in common? Full moons.
This new trailer for Werwulf gives us a much better idea of what this film is actually about. Obviously, we know that a man (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) turns into a werewolf and unleashes hell. But here we meet what appears to be his wife (Lily-Rose Depp), a knight who wants to rid the world of wolves (Willem Dafoe) and all sorts of other strange-looking people. Check it out.
I mean, basically, it’s exactly what you’d expect, right? A super realistic take on a werewolf movie, with a ton of horrible things happening every second. You know. A film by Robert Eggers.
But we also see that there is a family here and certainly a lot of hatred towards wolves in general. And that haunting final line from the trailer makes it clear that, even though Taylor-Johnson’s character has become a werewolf, he does so to save his soul. We’re excited to see not only all the crazy werewolf stuff, but also where Eggers decides he wants the audience to go. Do we like this guy? Do we hate him? A bit of both? We’ll see.
Werwulf opens on December 25 and, before that, there are full moons on October 26, November 24 and December 23. Mark them on your calendars, Eggers fans. There are certainly more on the way.
