Anthropic, the artificial intelligence (AI) company known for creating the chatbot Claude, posted a net loss of more than $80 billion in the first half of 2026, according to the Wall Street Journal, as the market anticipates its impending initial public offering (IPO).

The company also indicated it could spend as much as $750 billion in coming years to acquire more computing capacity, including potential deals currently under discussion, the Journal reported Tuesday.

The main cause of the loss was $72 billion in accounting fees related to changes in the value of convertible notes and other financial instruments issued by Anthropic to raise funds, the report said.

The loss figure was up from $13 billion a year earlier, according to a draft prospectus, a legal document that companies submit to financial regulators for their IPOs.

The numbers show the high costs of the AI race, even as investors take a closer look at whether the money companies are pouring into chips and data centers will pay off.

Anthropic also shared a list of potential risk factors, including uncertainty about how to prevent its products from doing harm, whether through sophisticated cyberattacks or blackmail from rogue models.

Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment and the report on nonpublic information could not immediately be verified.

Investors weigh losses

Reuters first reported in September that Anthropic had posted a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, as part of a series of exclusives from its IPO prospectus.

The company has benefited from the popularity of Claude Code, its coding assistant that developers use to write software and create applications.

But some current and potential investors who attended Anthropic’s investor day in San Francisco, California, last week are eyeing a lower valuation of the AI company after its latest financial disclosures, four people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Investors who attended the event discussed a valuation of around $1.5 trillion, three of the people interviewed said, a significant drop from the roughly $2 trillion valuation previously expected for the November stock sale.

Anthropic’s revenue soared to $16.3 billion in the six months ended June 30, from $1.1 billion a year ago, while spending on AI infrastructure nearly quadrupled to nearly $9 billion, the Journal reported.

Anthropic reported last week that it could take months for AI to learn to self-replicate on everyday home devices.
