At least four people die in floods in eastern Spain
At least four people have died after heavy rain and severe flooding in eastern Spain, forcing hundreds to flee. The worst affected areas are in the Valencia and Alicante regions on Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast.
In the town of Oliva, two bodies were found on Monday. One of the victims was a 79-year-old woman found at her home, while another was a man who died of a heart attack at a campsite.
In Sagunto, a man drowned while swimming on the beach, while in Catalonia a woman died after falling into a rain-swollen stream.
Emergency services rescued more than 450 people stranded by rising waters. Some had to be evacuated by plane from flooded roofs, buildings and vehicles, while others were brought to safety by boat.
Emergency restrictions
Authorities imposed emergency restrictions in several municipalities, asking people to stay at home. Most restrictions have since been lifted.
The Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, including Mallorca and Ibiza, have also been affected, with schools closed and some flights canceled or delayed.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said emergency military teams were assisting in the rescue efforts and pledged the government’s full support.
The latest floods come almost two years after the Valencia region suffered devastating floods that killed more than 220 people.
