Bill Belichick’s comments on third down couldn’t have been more ill-timed
When you interview Bill Belichick at a football game, you risk him leaving you hanging or giving you nothing to work on.
Just before the second quarter of Saturday’s game between Belichick’s North Carolina and Notre Dame, Belichick ended up giving reporter Taylor McGregor gold, but not in the way he had planned.
The Fighting Irish led the Tar Heels 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, and Belichick’s team began the second quarter on defense. The good news is we were on 3rd and 7, and if they could hold off Notre Dame here, they would get the ball back and have a chance to tie.
A sullen Belichick met with McGregor for a brief interview before the start of the quarter and was asked how his team could stop this play. After staring at the middle-back for a moment, the UNC coach replied dryly: “Well, it’s third down, you know. They’re one for two on third down. So we’ll see how it goes here.”
A classic Belichick response that didn’t answer the question.
ESPN then immediately moved to the critical play, and Notre Dame quickly scored a touchdown with a receiver so wide open you would have thought the Tar Heels didn’t realize the play had started.
“Well, this is the third try… We’ll see how it goes here.”

Well, we saw how that happened, okay.
Notre Dame kept that energy en route to a 37-26 victory that made them 5-0 and dropped North Carolina to 2-2. As for what Belichick can do to get things back on track in his second season at the helm, we’ll see how that goes here.
