Box office: Verity has $4.5 million in previews, Digger at $1.2 million
Another Colleen Hoover adaptation hits theaters as Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson bring the author’s bestselling novel “Verity” to life this weekend.
The Amazon MGM thriller grossed $4.5 million at the box office. It’s on track to debut with $30 million to $35 million and reach No. 1 on the charts, which would mark Hathaway’s third No. 1 film after “The Odyssey” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
Produced for $40 million, “Verity” is expected to be another hit in the recent spate of adaptations of Hoover’s novels, which include 2024’s “It Ends With Us,” 2025’s “Regretting You” and “Reminders of Him” from earlier this year. “It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively, is the biggest of the bunch with an opening of $50 million and a worldwide gross of $350 million. “Verity” is expected to fall to second place and surpass “Reminders of Him,” which debuted with $17 million, and “Regretting You,” which had $13.6 million.
Hathaway plays lonely author Verity Crawford in the film, unable to finish her latest novel after an accident. She and her husband, played by Josh Hartnett, hire Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) to finish Verity’s manuscript, but she finds herself embroiled in a web of mystery and lies.
“Verity” should have no trouble dominating this weekend’s new release, Tom Cruise’s “Digger.” Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, “Digger” is expected to be one of this year’s biggest box office bombs. It grossed $1.2 million in previews and was expected to open with just $12-15 million against a staggering $125 million budget (although it reportedly made over $160 million). Cruise plays an oil tycoon who must save the planet from climate catastrophe in this environmental thriller. Reviews haven’t been favorable to the film, but Cruise and the “Digger” team addressed the bad press and asked viewers to see the film for themselves.
