
DOJ Won’t Reopen Powell Criminal Investigation, Blanche Says
Justice Department Won’t Reopen Criminal Investigation of Former Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on central bank building renovation project, attorney general says Todd Blanche said Friday.
“We will not reopen a criminal investigation against him,” White told Bloomberg News in an interview, following an inspector general report released earlier this week that found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
Always, White did not rule out further review of the renovation project and potential future actions if wrongdoing was later discovered. He also said the DOJ could investigate evidence of criminal wrongdoing uncovered by an independent auditor the Fed said it would hire to review the project’s costs.
Powell He stepped down as Fed chairman in May, when his four-year term officially expired, but remained a member of its board. He said this was to defend the independence of the central bank.
