Orchard Park, New York (WGR) – Buffalo Bills head coach Joe Brady was happy that his team found a way to beat the Los Angeles Chargers, 24-16, on Sunday, even though they weren’t playing their best football.
The Bills dug themselves into a 10-0 hole early in the game after turning the ball over multiple times, including on the very first offensive play when James Cook fumbled.
In total, the offense turned the ball over five times during the game.
“Nothing that happened yesterday was out of our control,” Brady said of the turnovers. “We did everything we could to try to lose this football game yesterday by losing the football.”
But thanks to a defense that hung in there, made key plays when needed and kept the Chargers out of the end zone after a touchdown on their first drive, the Bills were able to leave Highmark Stadium with a 3-0 record.
“Offensively, we didn’t have our fastball yesterday. But defensively, we had our fastball,” Brady said. “As we continue to learn how we’re going to find different ways to win, to be able to win yesterday when our offense wasn’t at its best but our defense was keeping us in this football game and playing some really exceptional football, it’s going to pay dividends down the road.”
Brady did not provide an update on injured players Monday, including cornerback Christian Benford, who left the game and ultimately was ruled out with a toe injury. Benford wore a walking boot in the locker room after the contest.
Quarterback Josh Allen also suffered a blow to his left knee in the fourth quarter and appeared to limp after the game.
Brady said Allen is always banged up the day after games, but added, “I usually never worry about him” and that they will see how players dealing with injuries progress throughout the week.

Mathis suspension lifted
Bills defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis’ three-game suspension was officially lifted Monday. Mathis served three games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy due to an alcohol-related incident while with the New York Jets in the spring of 2025.
The Bills have a three-day waiver to add Mathis to the active roster. They will have to modify their list by Thursday.
