Brewers and Padres announce NLDS rosters

The Brewers and Padres play Game 1 of the NLDS tonight in Milwaukee, with Jacob Misiorowski start against Robbie Ray. The clubs have announced their 26-man rosters for the series, although the Padres have already made one change since this morning’s initial announcement.

Right-handed Randy Vasquez will temporarily replace his right-handed compatriot Walker Bühlersince Buehler was listed on the paternity list. Per playoff rules, Buehler can be away from the team for a maximum of three days and a minimum of one day. This calls into question Buehler’s availability for today’s Game 1 and Sunday’s Game 2, so it’s possible Buehler won’t be activated before the series heads to San Diego for Game 3 on Tuesday. It looked like Buehler was going to start one of the first two games of the series, but Michael King could now be assigned as the starter for Game 2, as King would work steadily on rest after pitching Tuesday in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series.

Aside from Vasquez’s late replacement for Buehler, San Diego is using the exact same team it used in the Cubs’ two-game sweep. None of the relief pitchers made more than one appearance in the NLWCS and only Adrien Morejón pitched more than one inning, so the Padres apparently didn’t feel the need to bring in new weapons to the bullpen. King’s seven shutout innings in Game 1 certainly helped in that regard, both for this series and for the Padres’ ability to use four pitchers in relief of the starter in Game 2. Nick Pivetta (which lasted 3 1/3 innings).

There was at least one doubt about Joey OrtizMilwaukee’s availability, as the infielder had not played since Milwaukee’s penultimate regular season game. A bruised right knee specifically ruled Ortiz out of this game, but manager Pat Murphy said Ortiz was playing with groin and oblique soreness. A full week of rest now allows Ortiz to be ready to return to action, so the Brewers will likely have one of the hottest hitters of the second half in their lineup at third base. Andrew Vaughn is also back for the Crew after being activated yesterday from the 10-day IL, as Vaughn had not played since September 19 due to illness.
