Canadian CEO David Morton and his daughters shot wife attacked with hammer during Toronto home invasion
A Canadian real estate CEO and his two daughters were shot dead while his wife was hit with a hammer during an invasion of their multimillion-dollar home in an affluent Toronto neighborhood Thursday morning.
MAC Group boss David Morton and his family were attacked when three masked men burst into their gated Bridle Path property around 3:45 a.m., according to the Toronto Sun.
The suspects, armed with handguns and a hammer, gained access to the five-bedroom residence through a back door, Toronto Police Service Inspector Kristy Smith told reporters.
Morton, 75, and her daughters, Maggie Zohil-Morton and Cristina Zohil-Morton, confronted the unidentified intruders who wore ski masks and hooded sweatshirts inside the home.
“A struggle ensued during this altercation during which the suspects fired their weapons several times and one victim was struck with a hammer,” Smith said.
The trio “attempted to fight off” the intruders when they were shot, sources told the outlet.
Morton and one of her daughters were shot in the leg, while the other girl suffered a gunshot wound under the arm, the outlet reported.
Morton’s wife, Doriana Zohil-Morton, who is also president of MAC Group, was attacked by one of the suspects wielding a hammer.
Two of the family members suffered “life-altering injuries” and remained hospitalized while the other two suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Smith said.
The family members have not been identified due to their injuries.
Descriptions of the suspects have not been released, but authorities said they fled the area in an SUV.
It was not immediately known if anything was stolen from the home during the invasion.
The motive for the attack has not been revealed, but it is believed they were looking to rob the upscale neighborhood.
“There was a violent interaction. There was a demand for valuables inside the home. It’s uncertain at this point whether or not they made off with anything,” Smith said.
“A wealthy area where people would have things they wanted would be the motivation for this,” Smith added.
The 5+1 bedroom, 7 bathroom is valued at $2.1 million and includes a tennis court, in-ground pool and private gardens to “enhance a luxury lifestyle” according to an online listing.
A neighboring home on 10,000 square feet of property is listed for $8.45 million in posh Nabe.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called on the community to come forward with any information about the attack and said police security would be increased in the neighborhood.
“I am deeply troubled by the violent home invasion early this morning in the Bridle Path neighborhood. My thoughts are with the family and their loved ones, who are going through something no family should ever have to face. I pray for their full recovery,” Chow wrote on X.
The MAC Group is a family-owned business based in Toronto with sub-divisions specializing in real estate, hospitality and corporate housing.
Morton oversees all divisions of the company as he has 30 years of experience in hospitality and real estate, according to the company’s website.
The couple’s only daughter, Cristina, is listed as the founder of Zohil-Morton Law and specializes in Canadian immigration law services.
Maggie Zohil-Morton is also listed as an employee of the MAC Group, with her hands on different departments.
