Capcom plans to evolve RE Engine into an “AI generation game engine”

Capcom wants to transform its in-house RE Engine into what it calls an “AI generation game engine.”

As reported by gamebiz (via VGC), programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the plans at the “Capcom Open Conference RE:2026” event yesterday (October 2), explaining that the changes come as part of an ongoing overhaul dubbed Project REX.

RE Engine has been in development since 2014 and debuted in Resident Evil 7 in 2017. Since then, it has been the engine behind the best part of 30 Capcom titles.

Ishida highlighted three challenges that drive the REX project: first, games have grown so large in scope and data volume that build and iteration times slow down development; second, RE Engine is now used by over 2,000 developers, including international staff and people from other engines, requiring better multilingual and accessibility support; and third, AI must be integrated into the development pipeline rather than added to it.

This is why Capcom intends to bundle several new systems into the REX project, including RE:Dox, which standardizes data processing in all formats, RE:UI, which speeds up development tools by separating appearance from state, and RE:Log, which replaces textual logging with an ID-based system.

He also talked about RE:Flows, a visual scripting tool that automatically converts to boilerplate code; and RE:Runtime, a reworked runtime core built around batch processing for large numbers of characters, as well as a new optimized runtime layer called RE:C++.

Ishida’s goal is to create an engine where AI can understand and generate code, run automated tests to find bugs, and directly support development, working toward what he called a future where teams “make games with AI.” Capcom says it has already open sourced some of the underlying technology to facilitate AI training.

The announcement follows comments Capcom made last June, when it told investors that its use of generative AI was intended to “improve the efficiency of routine operations so that our developers can spend more time creating core value,” while emphasizing that “the creativity at the heart of such experiences should be managed by humans.”

On a related note, the upcoming Switch 2 port of Monster Hunter Wilds, with all of its free DLC updates – including new monsters – will be available on December 4. It should arrive with the local cooperative.
