Carrot Top has been released from the hospital after being treated for a suicide attempt last week, a representative for the comedian confirmed to NBC News on Saturday.
The 61-year-old artist, whose real name is Scott Thompson, was hospitalized after the September 18 attempt. No additional details about the medical emergency have been made public.
“His family and loved ones are deeply grateful for the concern, prayers and respectfully request privacy,” a spokesperson for the comedian said in a statement last week.
The hospitalization comes amid a controversial civil dispute involving the comedian. In court filings, Carrot Top’s lawyers have accused singer-artist Brian Evans of attempting to extort their client – allegedly demanding large sums of money while threatening to reveal embarrassing information, “false allegations” and “salacious documents.” Evans claims to have appeared as the opening act for the Carrot Top show in Las Vegas.
Following the suicide attempt, Carrot Top’s lawyers asked the judge overseeing the case to limit what Evans, who is representing himself, could enter into the public record, arguing that releasing “extremely private documents on a case watched by the national media” would cause irreparable harm.
Carrot Top rose to fame in the 1990s thanks to his curly red mane and loud wardrobe, and remained a pop culture figure for decades.
