At the two-yard line, the Kansas City defense looked to keep Denver out of the end zone. On third-and-goal, Nick Bolton remained untouched on a blitz and sacked Bo Nix, ending the drive with Denver settling for three points.
Patrick Mahomes felt the pressure on third and short but escaped the pocket and connected with Xavier Worthy on the run to pick up the first down.
End of first quarter: Broncos 3, Chiefs 0
Three plays later, Mahomes found Rashee Rice for a 25-yard gain to bring the Chiefs into Broncos territory.
On third and short, Andy Reid set up a run in the inside zone for Emmett Johnson, but defensive tackle Zach Allen stopped Johnson in the backfield.
Harrison Butker kicked a 44-yard field goal to tie the game.
Nix responded by firing a laser at Marvin Mims Jr. for a 30-yard gain.
Dobbins followed with an 18-yard run, continuing to gain big yards against the Chiefs defense. He finished the drive with an eight-yard rushing touchdown, scoring the first touchdown of the game.
Mahomes continued to be efficient, completing 10 straight passes. However, when he opted for lucky number 11 on third down, his pass was batted away, effectively ending the drive.
Butker added three more points with his leg to keep the Chiefs within reach.
The Broncos tried to add three more points before halftime, but Will Lutz failed on a 67-yard field goal attempt.
Mahomes then connected with Rice to reach the 30-yard line before finding Jalen Royals to bring the Chiefs to the 17-yard line, putting Butker in the best field goal zone.
Butker kicked to cut Denver’s lead.
End of second quarter: Broncos 10, Chiefs 9
After making three of three field goal attempts in the first half, Butker attempted a 66-yard field goal but missed. The Broncos took over at the Chiefs 44-yard line.
Mahomes felt pressure from DJ Jones and was sacked on third down, forcing the Chiefs to punt.
On Denver’s next possession, Khyiris Tonga sacked Nix on third down, forcing the Broncos to punt the ball back to Kansas City.
The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and turned the ball over to Denver.
End of third quarter: Broncos 17, Chiefs 9
The Broncos offense finally started clicking again as Nix picked up three crucial first downs. One of those completions went for 14 yards, with Nix hauling in at the end of the play.
Dobbins found the field for the second time this afternoon, staying intact for a 12-yard rushing touchdown to extend Denver’s lead.
Mahomes knew the passing game wasn’t working, so he used his legs to pick up a crucial third-and-12 with a 14-yard run early in the drive.
On fourth-and-4, Mahomes once again attempted to take the first down with his legs. As he reached for the ball toward the first down marker, he took a hit and fumbled. The Broncos got the ball back, ending the Chiefs’ scoring chance.
At the two-minute warning, Lutz missed another 67-yard field goal attempt.
