Judge plans to block construction of Trump’s triumphal arch
A federal judge was skeptical Friday about the Asset the US administration’s attempt to begin construction of President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch at the foot of Arlington National Cemetery.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said the recent decision of the Supreme Court of authorize the construction of a ballroom at the White House after a preservation group was sued, that doesn’t preclude similar legal action against the arch, which could begin as early as November 5.
The Vietnam veterans who sued over the ark — and who described deep personal connections to the “sacred ground” in and around Arlington Cemetery — had a more compelling case that could be taken up by the Supreme Court, the judge said at a hearing.
Always, Chutkan agreed that the question of whether veterans had standing to sue to block the arch was complex and said she would review the issue over the weekend. The plaintiffs are asking him to stop construction of the ark by next week.
