China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has reportedly asked domestic companies to indicate how many RTX Pro 5500 units they plan to purchase and what they would use them for, signaling their intent to approve the transactions.

The RTX Pro 5500 is a Blackwell-generation professional workstation GPU released this month, featuring 84GB of GDDR7 memory and 21,760 CUDA cores, with a reported starting price above $6,000, according to TechPowerUp. The chip falls outside the data center accelerator category that has been the main target of successive rounds of U.S. export controls since October 2022, potentially giving Beijing greater regulatory latitude to greenlight purchases without triggering new friction with Washington.
The timeline follows last week’s Xi-Trump summit in Washington, during which controls on chip exports were conspicuously absent from the two governments’ official reports. USTR Jamieson Greer told CNBC that export controls considered national security issues had been “taken off the table” during trade negotiations, and China’s Foreign Ministry did not mention export controls in its announcement of the summit’s eight outcomes, according to the South China Morning Post.
