Sen. Chris Murphy remained hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a stroke over the weekend, his office confirmed.
“He continues to improve and is encouraged by the outpouring of well wishes,” Josh Sorbe, Murphy’s communications director, told CNBC in an emailed statement. “He voted early in Connecticut and he encourages everyone to make their voices heard today by voting and sending a message in this pivotal election.”
His office did not provide additional details when asked about his status or expected recovery.
The Senate is scheduled to resume its work Monday after Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Murphy began experiencing stroke symptoms Saturday while attending his son’s hockey game, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement Sunday.
“He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had had a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment,” Herwitt said.
Herwitt said at the time that Murphy was “awake and alert.”
Johns Hopkins Hospital’s main campus is in Baltimore, although it has other locations in and around Washington.
Murphy is not up for re-election Tuesday, but has traveled extensively this fall to support Democratic candidates. Murphy came to the Senate in 2013 after a six-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has also been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate in 2028.
