JetBlue is leading the industry in raising checked baggage fees…again!

Comments Off on JetBlue is leading the industry in raising checked baggage fees…again!

For some reason, JetBlue tends to be the industry leader in raising checked bag fees, and its competitors tend to follow. Earlier this year, JetBlue was the first major U.S. carrier to increase checked baggage fees, and now the airline is raising checked baggage fees again…

JetBlue tries to increase revenue with higher checked baggage fees

Effective November 3, 2026, JetBlue has increased checked baggage fees. JetBlue has a fairly complicated pricing structure for checked bags, with off-peak and peak-hour rates, as well as different rates depending on whether you pay for the bag 24 hours or more in advance.

Below is a table of JetBlue’s new checked baggage fees.

As you can see, a first checked bag during off-peak hours on a domestic flight will now cost you between $50 and $60 (depending on whether you pay in advance), while a first checked bag during peak periods on a domestic flight will now cost you between $55 and $70 (depending on whether you pay in advance or not). For context, below are the dates considered peak for baggage fee purposes.

Needless to say, paying $50-$70 for a first checked bag is a pretty significant cost, especially when you consider how low the cost of checked bags used to be. For a one-way ticket, you’re looking at $100-140. For a family of four, it would cost between $400 and $560.

Raising checked baggage fees is easy money for airlines

When JetBlue raised checked baggage fees earlier this year, the airline released a statement saying it was increasing checked baggage fees to be “more competitive” and that “while we recognize that fee increases are never ideal, we take careful consideration to ensure these changes are only implemented when necessary.” I imagine this time the logic is pretty much the same.

The simple reality is that oil prices are rising sharply. Airlines have actually done a solid job of keeping fare increases going. But that’s not enough to fully offset the rising cost of jet fuel.

JetBlue is in dire financial straits and hasn’t made a profit since before the pandemic. The airline hopes to make an operating profit in 2027, although that seems particularly optimistic to me. The logic for increasing checked baggage is therefore threefold:

  • The airline expects its competitors to measure up, so when each airline charges more, it doesn’t become a reason to book away from JetBlue.
  • JetBlue hopes that the increase in checked baggage fees will encourage more people to apply for a co-branded JetBlue credit card, which obviously has many financial benefits for the carrier.
  • Many consumers might be put off by a higher fare, but might not notice sky-high checked bag fees because it’s not necessarily the first thing someone checks.

Checked baggage fees are an easy target for boosting revenue

Conclusion

JetBlue just increased checked baggage fees again, and you’ll now pay between $50 and $70 for a first checked bag on a domestic flight. This is JetBlue’s second price increase on checked bags so far this year. When airlines are trying to increase revenue, checked bag fees are often an easy solution.

When competitors compete, it also becomes something inevitable for consumers, other than getting a credit card… which also has an advantage for the airline! I will be shocked if other airlines do not follow this decision by JetBlue.

What do you think about JetBlue’s increased checked baggage fees?
