On Reddit, the developer of RemoveMacAI declared the tool open source and explained in more detail how it works:
It uses a configuration profile that you approve in System Settings as well as Apple’s own Asset Service, so (System Integrity Protection) remains enabled and nothing in /System is touched directly. removemacai revert removes the profile and macOS re-downloads the templates when you re-enable a feature.
The developer also said that you can remove only the Apple Intelligence features you don’t want and keep the others.
Some users on Reddit have reported that the tool works and has 1,700 stars on GitHub as of this writing.
The interest in RemoveMacAI demonstrates some users’ aversion to some or all of Apple Intelligence’s features, despite Apple’s growing focus on AI-based devices and software upgrades in its computers and other devices.
“This reminds me of all the cleanup you’ve always had to do when you install Windows. Looks like we’ve gotten to the point on macOS too, where you have to run third-party scripts on a fresh install of the OS to regain control of your system resources and remove unwanted crapware,” one Hacker News user wrote in response to RemoveMacAI.
Although many users are happy to leverage Apple Intelligence in their gadgets, RemoveMacAI is an easy way for others to regain control of the presence of Apple Intelligence on their computers, something Apple previously offered.
