What caused American bombers to leave RAF Fairford?

Twelve valuable and strategically important B-1 bombers now departed en masse and apparently with such haste that, reportedly, the in-flight refueling planes needed to get them back across the Atlantic to their home bases in the continental United States were still being refueled while the B-1 Lancer crews were being ordered to rush for takeoff.
